The discipline of discipline

I had a conversation the other day with one of my closest friends out in California who is one of the most creative and innovative people I know.  Mike and I go way back and have always had that “two minds are greater than one” relationships.  Whenever we’d grab a cup of coffee, or breakfast at Kimmy’s, we’d have some of the best conversations.  I’m fairly certain that at one point we had solved the world’s problems, but that’s another blog.

Mike has always been someone who believed in me.  He’d press me and press me (and I, him) to continue to create great ideas, as it has a purpose and people need to hear what he or I had to say.

Ever sense I left California, I’ve been out of the groove.  I’ve been ok with complacency.  I’ve given up on solving my Holy Discontent.  Some might say, even apathetic.  That is, until this past conversation.  Mike really, really pushed me to “get at it.”

So, my question to you is: How do you (personally) master discipline?  How do you get off your lazy butt and accomplish a big goal?  I’m not talking like, “Hun, get off your lazy butt and mow the lawn.”  I’m talking more like, “I’ve got a great idea for a business”, or, “I am going to master playing the guitar.”  Seriously, I need help with the discipline of discipline.  How can I balance family life with my personal goals without feeling like a flaky husband & father?  How can I get back into the groove?  I know that “no discipline is pleasant at the time,” so I’m willing to put forth the effort.  But where do I start?

  • Balance is always the tricky thing. To me, family is first…my kids grow and change everyday, I don’t want to miss a minute of that. My relationship with my wife is still growing (even after 11 years of marriage)…I certainly don’t want to miss that…so my personal goals feel like they constantly start and stop but continually move forward. God knows what our goals are…and he decides when we will reach them…so in the meantime, we need to enjoy, appriciate, and work with what he puts in front of us everyday…trust that he will modivate us, put is in the right situations, give us the right tools, to get us to our goal(s) when he we wants us to get there. In other words…Enjoy the ride!

  • Come on Joe! Embrace and step into the role God has blessed you with and remember who you are and then just man up.
